Okay. I got an 89 camaro RS with what Im pretty sure is a turbo 350 automatic transmission. Anyways. I have first and second gear but anything past that and the engine just revs like its not in gear. Now Its probably the band are just worn out. That being the case what I want to know is how hard would it be to replace them myself. What would I have to get? Any special tools I would need? Any help would be great. Thanx all.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you have a 700R4 trans. If you're already pulling the trans you may want to completely rebuild it right away...

If you are pulling the transmission anyways, why not just rebuild the whole thing or go get one from a junkyard with low miles and put it in.

about how much would it cost to rebuild it? Is it something I shouldnt do myself being that I've never done it before?

Probably not, once you get them apart it can get pretty messy. Check with the junkyard around you like I said, you should be able to find a tranny for pretty cheap with relatively low milage, plus then all you have to do is pull the broken one and put in the slightly used one.

the only problem with junkyard trannies is you never know what your getting.. why go through all the trouble if it might only last a month.. Keep in mind that 99% of the old 3rd gens have been drivn by kids, and drivin Hard, and thats why they're at the junkyard..

If you fancy yourself handy with a wrench, First, find out what kind of tranny you have.. Haynes/chilton Makes a "rebuild your own tranny" book that apparently takes some of the confusion out of doing it.. Just get a trans rebuild kit, and the book for your tranny, and have at er'..

If you fail miserably, you could always take it in or go the junkyard route..

No Damone, I don't work at a junkyard... But I have had very good luck with used stuff I've purchased from them. I only mentioned it because my friends tore a transmission from a 97 bonneville apart hoping to rebuild it and it was a nightmare. So, if a person isn't that experienced with cars I would suggest just replacing it rather than trying to fix it since that can cause more problems than when it was broken.

I think Im gonna try to get that book and give it a shot. If I mess everything up I can always risk getting one from a junkyard. Thanx for the suggestions. Although more are welcome
