supercharged 3.8 camaro question

Hey i need some help, ive got my eye on a really nice 97 camaro but its a v6, but ive also recently come accross a used supercharger from a 3.8 gtp, i was wondering how hard it would be to put that charger on the 3.8 camaro, and if there would be any problems with the computer, space under the hood, etc... i know these v6's have some power already so im just checking it out, i would buy a z28 if i didnt have to win the lotto every week to afford insurance and gas haha, anyways some help would be appreciated, thanks

Re: supercharged 3.8 camaro

z28's arn't much more then a 6er

Even if you do boltup the supercharger you'll have to rebuild the camaro engine cause its not made ot handle boost. After you get everything set in you'll be paying as much if not more for turbo on 3.8 as you do a z28. but a supercharged 6er is gonna be as fast or maybe faster then z28 if you build it up right
how much is the camaro and hte scer?

The one im looking at right now is 6000, i didnt think thats too bad for 67000 miles and 5spd. I still havent ruled out the Z28, but i thought if i could do it cheap enough that a supercharged 3.8 would atleast compete w/ the z28 because of the weight difference, another thing i was wondering about is the transmission, i know the T5 from the 3rd generation cars will basically be broken in half by anything bigger then the 305 and i know they still break even then. would that be an issue with the sc 3.8? would the newer 5spd hold up?

Re: supercharged 3.8 camaro

I'm not sure if the 5-speed you have right now would hold up. I'm thinking that until you push the 350-400hp range it should hold up imo. But thats with no real backup to claim. I know the T56's in maro's can hold up to 450hp approx before you need to upgrade the tranny.

I paid 4500 for a 97 5spd not in the best shape. Do your research. Like I said SCing a 6er would be awesome AS LONG AS you beef up your motor to take the PSI because they ARE NOT READY to take it. The Grand National engine and the Maro 3800's are TWO DIFFERENT ENGINE's. 3800I is GN 3800II is ours, its not ready to take it rightoff. Definately if you get SC and beef it up and throw a 100 shot you'll be running 12's easily imho. Hell, if you get everything working I wouldn't doubt if you got to the 10's. Would take a bit of work. But I'd be proud to say my 6er is faster then a vette etc. =)

He said GTP sc, not aftermarket. With that in mind, I think that your motor should hold out fine, but you will have to run premium. Drawback to the GTP sc is that is doesn't push that much boost stock, but I don't know of it's max output. The stock sc definitely wouldn't get you into the 12s, maybe the low 14s(GTPs are high 14s) because of the weight difference. Would be a fun build though, and those superchargers are fairly easy to come by, and for fairly cheap. I can just imagine what they've been through though....

EDIT: Forgot to add that the rating on those cars is 7 psi, making 200 rwhp at about 5200-5300 rpms and a pretty steady torque curve at 233 from 3000 to about 4100. That is where those good timeslips are coming from, the steady torque curve. They run 11.6 a/f ratio. The dyno graph that I got this info from was not SAE corrected though.

Re: supercharged 3.8 camaro

the GTP sc supercharger WILL NOT bolt up to the camaro 3.8L V6. The GTP has a lower compression from different pistons, it uses different cams, i believe but am not certain, that they used different heads, and if memory serves the bolt pattern for the intake manifolds are different, so that the supercharger wouldnt even bolt up if set on top of the camaro heads. You would be far better off getting your hands on a complete GTP sc engine and swapping it out. You would then have to swap out all the electronics and computers, and have them reprogramed to work with the rest of the camaro systems. Or reflash the PCM to work with the supercharged engine.

Re: supercharged 3.8 camaro

89 is more on the right track here.

THere are many blown and turbo 3.8 f-bodys running around... but the answer lies in the aftermarket. As 89 was saying, the GTP blower would be much more of a PITA to install than it is worh. Cheaper, more power, and easier would be an aftermarket kit, i.e. the RKSport Powerdyne kit. powerdyne kit works with stock internals, but for the extra power and assurance they'd provide forged internals and a custom cam would be good additions.

AHHHH! I learned something new today. Thanks for clearing that up 89, I had no idea that they didn't bolt up. I should have known it had dished pistons though...
