82 Rabbit Alternator

Does anyone have any idea of what it would cost (part + labor) to replace an alternator in an 82 Rabbit?

Is this an easy job?

Any suggestions on the best type of place to bring it?

Re: 82 Rabbit Alternator

if the rabbit in question has a/c and you doubt your mechanical abilities then seek help. (it is not really that difficult, but it can be frustrating to change an alternator on the early a/c equiped vws)

if the car does not have a/c and you doubt your mechanical abilities then get a manual and follow the steps outlined and save some cash (if you can manage to get a few basic tools: 6mm allen wrench, and i think a 13mm wrench) unless you just don't want to mess with it at all.

just count the belts on the engine:

two belts = pain in the butt (a/c equiped)

one belt = easy as it gets (non a/c)

if you decide to undertake the job on your own then you should be aware of certian safety precautions such as disconecting the battery to prevent accidental arcing, but if your charging system is stock you will probably have one plug that carries all of the electrical connections that you will be concerned with (as a plus they are enclosed in rubber, very safe to work with).
