98 taurus trouble code???
i have a 98 taurus w/duratec, check engine light came on a few days ago, took it to autozone code reads "gas to lean in bank 10" they suggested a fuel system cleaner, did that, came back on next day, then they suggested using lower octane gas, did that, came back on next day.....does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem without taking it to a ford dealership????

Have codes read again and post them back. Autozone is in the business of selling parts. I have never heard of "gas to lean in bank 10". It is more than likely "lean bank 1" The generic tools thay use are just to read codes. Please post codes back so we can help you.

sorry i was mistaken, it had said the exauhst was to lean not to rich...and if it is indeed the 02 sensor is this an easy do it yourself fix or would it require taking to a mechanic?

Re: 98 taurus trouble code???
Here is what Ford manual says to check for your DTC P0174:
The only mention of the O2 sensor is an exhaust leak before the sensor. Most people sell the sensor as a fix to get rid of the code temoprarily. It will come back if the cause of the problem is not corrected. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0171 bank 1 (Cylinder 1) and DTC P0174 bank 2 indicate the fuel/air ratio is too lean. The fuel trim system is at the rich correction limit. Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel. Contaminated fuel injector(s). Vapor management valve (VMV) leaking. Induction system Air leaks after the MAF. Vacuum leaks (vacuum lines and gaskets). Restricted air inlet. PCV system. Fuel purge system. Improperly seated engine oil dipstick. EGR System leaking gasket. Stuck open EGR valve. Leaking diaphragm. Base engine Oil overfill. Cam timing. Cylinder compression. Exhaust leaks before or near the HO2S(s). Check intake air system for leaks, obstructions and damage. Check air cleaner element, air cleaner housing for blockage. Verify integrity of the PCV system. Check for vacuum leaks.
