98ram 1500 manual trans either a nv3500 or nv4500. how do you find out which one you
Need to change gear oil in the trans.1 takes syn.oil the other takes regular gear lube..any info will help thank you

According to my owners manual on my 2001 1500 Ram all 1500's have NV3500 TRANS. 2500'S have NV4500. I think that was the case with your truck too. Do you start in 1st or 2nd gear. Manual recomends starting in 2nd for NV4500 owners as 1st is a "granny" gear for pulling situations. NV3500 owners start in 1st.

Correct -- my brother's '99 2500 has the NV4500, my '04 1500 has the NV3500.
