towing with a jimmy

we have a 2000 GMC Jimmy with a tow pkg, and we pull a race car on 16 ft trailer with a tire rack and tool box on trailer, It puts a big strain on the Jimmy what can we use to help with this and that is not real expensive?

Re: towing with a jimmy

You could buy a fullsize, that's about all that's gonna help with pulling the trailer.

Re: towing with a jimmy

Agreed, a full size is your best bet. I hate to say it but the Jimmy/S-10 series isn't really built for pulling a lot of weight, even with a tow package. If you can't get a fullsize, you would have to pretty much torque the heck out of the tranny with aftermarket parts, tougher, higher grip clutching systems, better cooling systems etc. The axles would need beefed up too, the stock gearing for a Jimmy probably isn't very low. By the time you spend a bunch of cash hopping up the Jimmy for pulling so it doesn't grenade on you, a full size could have been bought. Hope this helps.

Re: towing with a jimmy

All that came in the "tow package" on the Astro I used to have was an oil cooler, and lower gear ratio axle. It would pull 3-4 tons, but it was a huge strain on it, and stopping was almost non existant. I wouldn't want to pull with anything smaller than a 1/2 ton fullsize with a 305.
