Re: 1987 ford thunderbird

that wide open scars me i dont know what to tell you about the stalling.but the wide open:can be the cruise control if the vacum box breaks in the drivers side fender it will cause it to go wide open i dont know if thats you problem but if it is you can cut the cable for cruise cotrol going to the throttle body.oyea take the intake hose off the thottle body and look at the butter fly if its stuck on wide open thats your problem.
I learn that the hardway a few years ago i was racing in a stock enduro w/a '87'T-bird 5.0L i got into a bit of a wreck on the track and the car went into wide open throttle i thought a motor mount broke til i brought it home and figued it out.

If his butterfly was stuck open it wouldn't die when he popped it into gears, it would be like doing a nuetral slam. Its probabaly one of your sensors, O2 might do it, but I don't think so, the one I'm banking on if your TPS or your Ait meter... I think your car uses the VAM not the MAF shoudl be a box inline with your intake right after after the airbox I think. Those would most definealty do that... also it could affect the engine in such a way that it might cut off the strain is on it.
