Fuel Problem

I've got a fuel problem with my sons 89 jetta. We put a new clutch in it and when we were done the car started and ran just fine. The next day we tried to start it and the cylinders just fill with gas. We took the fuel pump fuse out and blew all of the gas out by cranking it over and then it started and ran for a while. As soon as we put the fuse for the fuel pump back in it floods the engine out. I did notice when we did have it running that some oil came out of the breather on top of the valve cover? Please help this thing has to get out of my driveway.

Re: Fuel Problem

I can't tell you how many times I've heard that scenario. Very often people forget to hook back all the ground cables - result is a fried ECM (computer). Almost any time you see a Digifant system that is flooding it's the ECM.

Re: Fuel Problem

Could this have happened because we unhooked the positive battery post instead of the neg?

Re: Fuel Problem

That would be okay. If the car ran for a while it may have been okay. I assume you've checked & are getting spark....

ecu

all it takes is a spark from a bad/loose ground wire at the tranny or even a spark at battery terminal.

shop on ebay for a digi-2 ecu they go as low as $20-40.

(Im assuming you dont have a 16v)

Re: Fuel Problem

I have spark, the car will run if I put the fuel pump fuse in for a minute and then blow the extra gas out of the cylinders. (Don't ask how I do this!) I think the engine is a 1.8,

Boschmann is right - you've likely fried the ECU. have had those exact same symptoms wneh we forgot to tighten the ground after doing an auto-to-manual swap.

if you unplug the single connector to the injector harness - it will start & run until all the fuel in the intake is burnt up. As soon as you reconnect it it will flood.

Digifant is not just a spark/ignition control, it is also a fuel injection control and it sounds like you have injector(s) that come on & stay on instead of pulse.
