New Learner Here....
Can anyone please tell me how the turbo really works?..because most of the peeps just know the basic shit like it spins by the exhaust flow and all that...but i want to know how you can adjust the spinning speed of the turbine to make it faster than the flow of the exhaust...how a waste gate works....turbo timer...how boosts controller works....and also one more thing....what are fuel cells?...what do they do...and what they're for....
i know its alot to ask but....just lovin the rotary power...haha thanks! |

Re: New Learner Here....
all you can adjust is boost, you can upgrade the turbo with better parts so it can spool faster... don't know what you are wanting to know really

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm
thats a start. read that first. you can search that site for information on fuel cells too.

Re: New Learner Here....
take some physic course.
you can make the exaust velocity faster by changing the exhaust manifoil configuration, but it would create more restriction |

how stuff works
well ... i'm new to this kinda thing too, but i'll try to explain it the way i was taught...
a turbocharger works by using exhaust gas, funneled across a turbine blade... this causes a pressure drop as the gases cool, causing expansion, causing the pressure to make the exhaust, or driven side of the turbo to spin... now the compressor side works by ingesting mass amounts of air and compressing it and forcing it into your engine, more air = more power. of course it doesn't stop there.... wastegate - this is what controls your boost pressure. it is generally mounted somewhere on your header and basically controls the amount of maximum pressure the driven side of the turbo can recieve... there are many different ways of controlling this device. most setups are mechanical, and when it senses a certain amount of boost pressure building up in the manifold it opens up, and lets the excess by... therefore contolling the boost pressure. all a "boost controller" or a "turbo timer" is is an electronic means of doing this, on-the-fly... quickly and easily. a turbo timer can be programmed to do many things, in conjuction with your ECU (car's computer), it will run the car longer after a hard run, if you intend to turn it off, to allow the turbo to cool down to prevent damage... or it can be programmed to administer a certain amount of boost below certain speeds (mph) or below certain rpm's... and a blow-off valve... one crutial part, only turbocharger specific. when you are in the throttle, and developing maximum boost, and you suddenly cut the throttle, or release it, the turbo is still spinning, and creating boost for a split second... a BOV is a wastegate in the sense that when you cut the throttle, it senses a spike in vaccuum pressure, opens up, and allows the still spinning turbo to vent of excess pressure to prevent damage to your engine. ... that's the PFFFFFT sound your car may make if its turbocharged. a "fuel cell" is not really what people make them out to be... they are basically a square-sized, application specific, baffled, foam filled (like a sponge, to prevent sloshing) gas tank... that's what i have been told... usually created in certain gallon capacites depending on application.... just my $.02... i'm a rotary enthusiast... and i try to do my part.. lol let me know if you want to know anything else, or to further explain anything. have fun |
