1999.5 jetta acceleration problems

I have a new 99 jetta and when i accelerate in 2nd and 3rd gear and give it some gas at low rpms it hesitates for a second, then jerks forward after that. I am also hearing a ticking sound all of the time, it is consistently louder with the rpm range and sounds like its coming from the engine. I just had water pump/timing belt surgery 2k ago and so far so good. Nothing strange other than lots of yellow and brown buildup in the oil filler housing, i drive all the time, about 20 min to work each way on the highway. Any ideas?

No the CEL has not come on at all. The car has about 98K miles on it if that helps at all.

Try spraying the ignition coil with water & see if the problem gets worse.
