Need help - My trannsmission
My car is an automatic transmission. Sometimes when it switches from 1st to 2nd gear it will rev all the way up to the end of the RPM gauge. It seems like it doesn't want to change gears. What could be causing this?

It's possible you're low on ATF.... I have an eclipse that had problems because the torque converter isn't the right kind and doesn't seal properly... it got stuck in neutral when shifting from 2nd to 3rd at this one spot near my home when it was low from leakage.

If atf fluid ok then go to dealer to check- as this probably electronically controlled tranny and need special computer tool to check and adjust shift points etc---you'll save in long run rather than fiddiling around and really running up a bill---This is experience talking!

Newer auto cars shift at different points depending on how much you're pressing gas. For example, on my friend's corolla, if you give it about half throttle, it'll rev all the way up to 5k, if you let off then step on the gas again, then it'll shift. Perhaps that's the way your car is designed too?

The first thing you should do when something is wrong with your tranny is check the fluid level and condition.
When it revs all the way up will it shift into third gear or stay in second? If it won't shift past second you govenor gear might be starting to stick closed. Though when this happens the transmission normally stays in first and won't shift any higher. |
