clicking 5.7 V8
I have a clicking in my 1994 5.7 V8, its worst when just starting and for a few minutes after that, then it fades out. Also when the engine is warmed up and accelerating it clicks. What is it and what needs to be done? Also its been doing for quite awhile, is it causing any damage to my truck engine?

Re: clicking 5.7 V8
Check for exhaust leaks. Look for broken exhaust manifold bolts and cracks in the exhaust manifolds.

Piston slap. Chevy uses short skirted pistons and they knock when first start up, goes away as it gets warm. My 98 does it. Engine guy who rebuilds my engines told me that, will use longer skirted pistons when I have it overhauled........

Re: clicking 5.7 V8
lifters might be sticking. try adding some lubricity(available from gm dealer) sometimes it works.

Re: clicking 5.7 V8
Try substituting a quart of dexron III instead of a quart of oil next oil change. If your a quart low on oil right now you could add a quart of dexron and drive until your next oil change. Tranny fluid has a very high detergent quality, which means it will help to loosen up the gunk stuck in the motor. I would also suggest using SeaFoam 1 day before you change your oil. It will further clean everything out. Make sure you are driving it enough to get the motor up to operating temperature(195 degrees ) for at least 10 minutes. Last, you could try actually taking off your valve covers and adjusting your valves using a procedure outlined in most haynes and chiltons manuals. I don't discredit the piston slap suggestion, but I doubt it. I am leaning more towards a semi stuck lifter or lifters. Good Luck. -Chris

Re: clicking 5.7 V8
yeah if it only clicks when your putting a load on the engine or the exhaust is cold, i bet it could be just an exhaust to block gasket. a friend of mine had the same problem and he was cheap and just tightened the bolts really well and it stopped lol

Re: clicking 5.7 V8
I tend to agree with the exhaust manifold gasket leak and not the piston slap. Pre 99 modles were the old style blocks and as he said it is the 5.7 and these engines did not have piston slap. I had an 88 with a 350 in it and the exhaust manifold gasket blew out just as i stepped on it leaving a light and it scared the hell outta me , it sounded like it broke a rocker arm or something. It was making what sounded like a loud clicking noise.

Re: clicking 5.7 V8
My 97 did it alot when I got the oil changed on time. (in a hurry went to quickie lube no. no.)
I did my next oil change and the problem went away... I would lean towards the lifters |

Re: Re: clicking 5.7 V8
I don't think GM used a manifold to head gasket (I've not seen one), but one could have been added after purchase, some do leak until warmed up as stated earlier. I've seen numorous cracked SB manifolds also. If you remove it to install gaskets you might have to purchase a tool to spread the manifold to get the bolts restarted they are a PITA on the truck. There was also a GM notice that most of the rattle at start up was the rods slapping together and not bearing noise. I think I remember GM saying that 15 seconds of slap was acceptable. Oil pressure is supposed to separate the 2 rods eliminating that noise.
