Question How do you increase torque? i.e. rear gears?

I have a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer (5.0 V-8) with no performance modifications as of yet! I'm looking for a way to increase torque at accelration. I've heard if the rear diff-gears are changed to a "racing" or differnent ratio then this will greatly increase take-off torque! Is this true? If so, what should I be looking for in the way of kits, parts etc.? Any other recomended mods are welcomed. Thanks!

changing your gears will not get you any more torque but going to a lower gearing will improve your top speed while going to a higher gearing will increase your off the line performance. now realize no matter which one you choose you will also recieve negative performance. like if you go lower gearing to increase your top speed you will lose off the line performance and vice versa. hope this helps i would recommend just some engine mods.
