Exclamation Somebody help-- please!

I have a 1998 Jetta GLS with 110,000 miles. I recently replaced the exhaust (mufflers, pipes, etc.) and the master cylinder. Prior to that, the car was the victim of a hit and run in a parking lot; the insurance company repaired the body work, but, in the process, damaged the alarm system. In the past, the ignition, the clutch, and some random coil have also been replaced.

On my way to school today, the car just stopped responding, and the RPMs didn't increase as I applied the gas. I thought that maybe I had fallen out of gear (it's a 5-speed), so I took it out of gear and put it back in. Still, nothing happened. i turned the car off, and it wouldn't turn back on. Every time I tried to start the car, it just keeps turning over and over, but it won't start.

The car has been towed and is now at the VW mechanic in Miami. Since it's a holiday, he's not sure how soon he can get to it, but I really need this car--it's my only means of transportation. Does anybody have any ideas about what could be wrong with it? Anything that might be helpful to suggest to the mechanic? The tow truck driver suggested it might be the timing belt, but who knows. I really need this car soon...soooo much to do....ugh.

Also, condering the current problem with the car as well as all of the things that I have replaced, do you guys think I should get rid of this Jetta? I've heard that Jettas are supposed to last for a very long time, but all of these major problems are getting ridiculous. I've wasted so much time fixing this car--it's annoying! Anyway, your thoughts are much appreciated.

Please help me out. Thanks everyone.

If the car seemed to crank faster than normal I would suspect timing belt also (hope it's not). It could be alot of things.
