1200.00 to do belts

I showed my mechanic the page on vfaq about changing the belts. These are all the new parts going in.

It seems pretty steep to me. 8.6 hours is a lot of time for a timing belt. He's probably adding all the book times together, but if you look up the timing belt that covers RI of all the secondary belts so these shouldn't just be added up. I'd get a second opinion. Also, you have balance shaft belt and lower timing belt listed but this is just 2 different names for the same belt. Is this a dealer? Because $74.50 seems like a lot per hour. I guess that's probably close to standard though.

Shit for $1200 I'd drive down to texas... Buy us a case of beer, get a hotel, couple of cheap hookers, get you one too... Change the timing belt, then go home all in 1 weekend!

Well thanks for letting me know I could be getting ripped off. I just hope if he does take less time to get the job done, that he will charge me less.

If we were to get hookers we would be too busy playing with them and the car would never get fixed. And plus if anything were to happen a talon trunk is way too small to fit 2 normal sized dead hookers. Unless maybe one of them was a midget.

I pay around 300 for all those parts, at the Stealer no less... I dont know where that 585 is coming from. Labor is always a matter of debate, but the parts cost is wacked.

I did the t-belt at the dealer when I first got my car. They did all of what you have there minus the serp. belts for 550 if I remember correctly. It was 5 hundred-something, at least.

For that price they didn't tension the belt right and it skipped the next day . At the advice of a couple members on this board I took it back to the dealer with a printed out copy of the vfaq write-up. They valued the warranty and bought me a new head, and re-did the job.

Moral of the story: I knew that if the job was done wrong, it would cost me. I took it to the dealer specifically because of their warranty. The better solution is to take it to someone who specializes in DSMs; you get your car fixed right for less, and they don't have to do the job twice while you're out a car for two weeks.

Out of curiosity I looked at the book time for a timing belt on an eclipse (I looked at both engines but they were pretty much the same). The book time for a timing belt is 4 hours, the time for the tensioners and pulleys was .1 for each and the water pump was in the half hour range. That is in addition to the timing belt. So I think it should be closer to the 4.5 to 5 hour range. All these times include the removal and instalation of the parts so things like the accessory belts would already be included with the timing belt. The mechanic is charging you for EACH belt in addition to the timing belt. If you have the option I would take the car and go to another mechanic.

Just cuz you told him to buy parts doesnt mean a thing...just dont pay for them. He can send them back unused I am sure. That price is way to much for that, guaranteed. I got a whole new engine for $1200 CAD. However, I got a better deal than most.

tell him that you changed your mind and realized he wants double the reasonable costs to do the job. either he will lower his price or he'll just klet you leave. either way if he doesnt have your car yet and hasnt started he can return the parts.
