Tranny oil?

I've decided to get some royal purple synchroshift and put it in hopefully this weekend. How much should I get? Is there any special weight or grade (dunno anything about tranny oil, is it all the same)? Also I might get some oil for the transfer case and rear dif, should I do that While I have the car up on jacks?

Re: Tranny oil?

Look into stealth316, he has a thing on AWD oil changes...all u need to know is there(link may even be in teh FAQ). The transaxle and rear diff are easy...so when you have the car up, knock them outta the way...
Transfer case is a PITA...I had to drop my downpipe to get to it...so I ended up doing that seperately.

Re: Tranny oil?

Transaxle=tranny right? Should I just get enough for both the rear diff and transfer case? They use the same stuff right? The synchros are in the transaxle right? What exactally does the transfer case do? From the diagrams I don't think the downpipe will be in the way of the fill plug, allthough it is in the way of the check plug lol, it says that 6 speeds you don't use the chekc plug.

Re: Tranny oil?

I just remember having a hard time getting access.
My advice, make sure you can open the fill plug before you loosen the drain plug...otherwise you can end up SOL.
If I remember correctly the rear and t-case used the same stuff...but double check that...I know I used the same stuff for 2 of the 3, but I don't remember if it was the rear and t-case, or the transaxle and t-case.

Yes transaxle = tranny

Re: Tranny oil?

It says that both the transfer case and tranny take 75w90 GL4. Rear diff takes GL5 and depenends on the temparature.

Transaxle: Transmission that sits transversely or sideways, in other words--> transaxle = FWD.

Transmission = RWD

For AWD you have a transaxle for fwd and a transfer case for the rwd portion.

Transfer Case: transfers engine torque to from the transmission or transaxle to the wheels. In your case it takes the torque from the front wheels and sends it to the rear. It does so by using a highly viscous fluid, instead of a direct connection like a gear or clutch-type assembly. The fluid is so thick that when the input shaft (to the transfer case from the tranny) spins, the fluid causes the output shaft (driveshaft to the rear wheels) to spin at the same speed almost instantaneously. Which then spins your rear diff. which splits it between the two rear wheels in some form or fashion (idk if 3S's have posi or no).
