Dies when i stop

Hi i have a 1996 ford escort 1.9 liter. The problem with it is when i stop at like a red light it begins to idle very rough and then it just stalls. I think the problem may be the IAC or something to do with igntion wires. The problem is i dont where the IAC is. If you have any any idea what my problem is or where the IAC is located let me know. Thanks

The IAC is located on top of the throttle body, is cylindrical, has a wiring harness going to it and held by two bolts.
They bind sometimes and cause the symptom you described. Take the harness loose, remove the bolts, be careful not to damage the gasket.
You can spray it with carb cleaner, and then a little WD40 or 3 in 1 oil on the shaft and bushing.

Before you spend alot of money on parts you don't need, try replacing the intake manifold gasket. This is probably the fix if your car DOESN'T have any check engine light on. This happened to my 1991 Escort. It would run fine if you were moving, but if I was stopped it would idle rough and try to die. I have to thank all of the folks here for giving me the help on this one.

easy to check too just spray some carb cleaner around the area where the gasket is and if the motor idol changes then that indicates the fluid was sucked in to the intake. My nova had the same problem once.

You may want to check the L shaped vacuum hose connection close to the throttle body. My 96 Escort started idling roughly, revved up and down, but I was able to put it in neutral and gas it a bit. When I popped the hood, I put my finger on the connection and the idle returned to normal. The rubber had developed a hole. I temporarily taped it but plan to find a replacement connection.

Re: Dies when i stop

My car has a simular problem. My car has been overheating and smoking and i have a leak in my radiator i think and i have to keep putting water in it like every other day and im about to put antifreeze in it for the first time since the cold season is coming. Its hard to start in the morning after the cold. and Ill be at a light and it will die or when i slow down it dies. Also, when i accelerate my engine makes a rattle/ticking noise, then when i let of the gas and coast it stops. I have no clue what it could be. It has new spark plugs, wireset, and battery because i just took it to the shop not too long ago. HELP!

I had the same problem with my 96 Escort like Donnie had explained. The car keep dying on me everytime I stopped or took my foot off the accelerator. I found out it was the little l boot on my engine. There was a tiny hole there. If I took the boot off and put my finger on it, it was fine. I still have problems with it because the boot continues to slip off....but it's not stalling on me anymore (knock on wood)

Re: Dies when i stop

ya my 1994 gt escort has a rough idle as well but the only time it will stall is when i down shift and come to a complete stop do u think that i might have the same problem with the vacuum hose or the idle air control

that rattle/ticking noise could be because your rockers need to be adjusted. if they r louse your valves may not be closing all the way and that could be interfering with your compression and with out compression your cylinders would not be firing properly causing it to stall

j-walk...I don't think it could be the same problem I had....I have no problem downshifting my car...it was only when I came to a complete stop or let it idle...Sorry but I can't tell you what it could be with yours..it could be possibly anything. Everyone that I've spoken to on here had helped me out tremendously so maybe someone can answer for you.
