Coolant leak
I replaced the water pump on my 1998 Dakota 3.9L V6 and all was well for about 3 days...... Now I am fishing for where the leak may be, My best guess is that it's behind the timing chain case???? is this possible, not a rocket scientist, I am confused where the coolant can be coming from. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

you may not have gotten a good seal when you replaced the gasket, you did put on a new gasket is take. and did you titen the hoses or hose back good ??? and did you use gasket sealer ??

I did a thorough job removing the gasket ( I was gasket cleaner growing up) I tourqued the bolts per specs and used RTV gasket sealer on both engine side and pump side... hard to say but I figure if the seal was bad then wouldn't it leak right away rather then wait a few days? Would a pressure tester pinpoint the leak? I also see a lot of corosion around the thermostat housing.

the corr. around your therm. houseing is a good indication that it is leaking, but is there fesh fluid around it ? Sounds like you did a fine job on the instalation. Only my thoughts and experience, a leake cam work it's way through if there was to be any pin hole in the seal job. i've had oil pans to do that.. if it's not that. your guess is as good as mine. and also i have purchased bad parts ! good luck

Thanks for the tips... I read up on the thermostat housing the Dakota has a tendency to become pitted even under the hose clamp. Just hoping that is not a head gasket. I'll post the turn out hopefully this weekend

DONE!! What a job.... it was the chain cover gasket..... it was probably the initial problem rather then the water pump, so when I tightened the bolts back up to specs that sealed the leak for a few days.... 1st time going into the chain case on a dodge still not sure why they decided on passing coolant thru the chain case ears. just glad the seal broke to the outside rather than filling the chain case. dealer wanted $12 for the part and $450.00 to put it in. I still think I came out ahead on that one.
