!971 Camaro

My son owns a 1971 camaro. The ignition switch is not working and needs to be replaced. The switch is located on the steering column. He took off the steering wheel but is unsure how to procede. Does anyone know how to remove the ignition switch?

Sure, put the wheel back on the column. Now go under the dash and remove the bolts/nuts holding the column up and let her down. the ignition switch is located down near the bottom end on the top side. Tape the actuator rod to the column, remove the screws from the switch and the electrical connector. Assemble in reverse order and make sure the actuator rod engages the switch properly.

Now, that was for the switch. IF you actually meant the ignition LOCK, keep the wheel off, get a lock plate compressor tool from the auto parts store ($15 max). Use it to compress the lock plate and remove the little lock ring just above the lock plate. Remove the lock plate, take the screws out of the turnsignal switch and carefully lift it up and to the left to get it out of the way. Now, on the right side down in the column there is a phillips screw, you may have to use a flashlight to see it. Unscrew it (about 5 threads) and remove it, it is about 1.5" long. Now you should be able to slide the ignition lock out of the column. Assemble in reverse order.
