2001 Cavalier Back End Noise

I have a 2001 cavalier. The back end is making this loud banging noise when I'm driving over bumpy road or train tracks. It sounds like it's coming from near the trunk. A friend of mine said something about a bar, but he didn't know what it was called. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks!

...Do you have anything in your trunk? i keep a tool box in my trunk for emergencies, and every time i go over a bump it makes a lotta noise... he might be referring to a sway bar...

My 97 does the same thing. I have not been able to locate its origin yet. Could be the muffler straps are letting go allowing the muffler to hit the frame. Take a look.

Lightbulb I had the same thing

hey i have a 96 cavi. it had the worst noise ever in the back kinda like popcorn. its was just a washer that conects the struts to the body. i replaced my struts and made sure that bolts was tighten down so the washer doesn't move...

Yea... Its the rear strut mounts...

you can replace just the mounts for 100 taxes in CDN if u do it yourself but u have to compress the spring..

if you take it to a shop they will want to replace ur mounts and struts...

I got away with just replacing the mounts and it was all good.

I have a 2001 Sunfirewith the same noise. I just backup and bump the brakes and the noise is there. Strut mounts as I was told. You would think be now they would realize this and do a recall.

Re: 2001 Cavalier Back End Noise

That sounds to me that you have a leak in your wheel cylinder and the fluid is going on to your drum. The fluid is sticky and will cause your wheel to lock at slow speeds. The same think I have had on my Sunbird. Can be dangerous at high speeds if you have to slam on your brakes.

Yeah... curtis that sounds defently like a brake problem and maybe even the strut mounts too..

idd jack it up... put a pry bar underneath the tire and pry up... if they is any play u can see/hear at the mount id replace it..

also inspect your stuts to see if there are leaking any oil and do the bounce test... if it bounces more then a couple times the struts are bad.

then take off your drum and take a look if the wheel cylinder is seazed or anything is damaged. then adjust the brakes to see if they are over tightened and test it out... THEN if it still locks up Bleed the line... if there are any grease or contaminents in the fluid it can cause the wheel to lock up... you only need to bleed the line at the tire locking up

we have 2004 Cavalier and it sounded like a bumping under the back seat and I believe it was a bushing that wasn't there.. I will check the repair order
