auto trans fluid

is there any way to check the trans fluid in my 96 passat? when i first start it up to go some where and put it in gear (its an auto) it is like it does not go in gear like it is still in neutral for a few seconds. i am HOPING it is just low on fluid. please let me know of any solutions.

I was having the same problem. Took it to a trans shop had the filter and pan gasket replaced today in fact and the "slipping has stopped so far. Mine is a 95 though so it may be diff. Keep in mind the trans fliuld is ridiculously priced...
