Re: Older vehicles in Japan?
well by keep do you mean "remain having" or "upkeep" :-)
There are plenty of old cars here in Oki and I'd say it's about the same as in the states as far as the ratio from new to old POS, to classics... overall about the same.

Re: Older vehicles in Japan?
The difference in Japan is that MOST Japanese don't like used things. That is why generally used cars are pretty cheap. The really old cars are generally only sought by guys who collect cars. There are a couple of vintage Skylines here on lots but they are out of sight as far as price goes.

There are old cars out here. But Japan doesn't have a lot of space. In America, a car might sit in the junkyard for years, giving it a chance to be fixed up by someone. Out here in Japan, due to their lack of land, many cars are crushed and recycled after being sent to the scrap yard. And like was said earlier, Japanese don't like used cars. Call them vain, I'm not sure why, they just don't. Okinawans will drive just about anything though, they are the poorest prefecture in Japan and therefore can not always afford the "new and best". But they don't seem to mind.
Mainland definatly has more of a selection of pricey cars, I've seen many a Ferrarri, Viper, Lamborghini, etc in Mainland. Not too many super high price cars in Okinawa though. Most people are content with a nice looking car.

Re: Older vehicles in Japan?
It isn't so much the space issue as it is the fact that they don't viewed used as very classy. They are more into new brand name stuff. Used is so common. No one wants to be common.

I was watching a show on Japanese TV about girls from Tokyo. It was talking about how these girls live in a tiny one room apartment and they hardly eat or do anything. But they are constantly getting their nails and hair done, and walking around wearing ridiculously priced clothes like Prada and Gucci. It was saying that some of these girls work 3..........believe it or not, even 4 jobs so they can buy this stuff. They even act snobby, like they are rich or something...and they're not, they are poor. I know a few girls like that. One of them works 2 jobs, just so she can try to look rich. She's not saving any money or going anywhere in life, but she's just happy with her Prada bag and Gucci Clothes. Hey whatever floats your boat.

Re: Older vehicles in Japan?
I lived in both mainland and now okiniwa. If you see a older car in mainland its usually well maintained and a luxury model. In Okinawa I've seen so many rust buckets I lost count. Japanese people have two sides, some stockpile money like pack rats and never spend a "dime" and some spend every "haku" yen on anything french to seem "rich".
