Exclamation hyndai elantra 2000 check engine signs after change spark plugs

i got a hyndai elantra 2000, i changed my spark plugs and the engine light has been on ever since. it even blinks alot of the time. i though it was i didnt gap them right so i went to the auto store and bought the expensive pregapped spark splugs and installed them, so i knew that it cant be that. other things the messed up is my gas millage it is a gas guzzler now, my horespower sucks now, and the steering wheel shakes more than often when i start the car. this never happened before i change my spark plugs. i hope it isnt major, cuz i am not a mechanic and dont know if it is something serious or not. any advice, or info will be greatly appriecatied. thank you

Strang, the same thing happened to mine (I have a 96)! Coincidentally, I had my spark plugs changed before the following happened, too:

Ever since last summer, my engine light has been on. finally last fall, it started to blink and just about stalled on me! I took it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong with it, and they replaced everything they could...fuel pump, fuel rails, they cleaned everything, checked rocker arms, coils...you name it!

The only thing they were able to tell me was that I had a missfire on all 4 cylinders, and they didn't know what was causing it. The dealership and 3 different mechanics later, no one has found the problem. Each time someone looked at it, they cleared the computer which turned off the engine light, but it would come back on a few days later.

My engine light is still on, the HP sucks, my steering wheel has always shaken, and the light used to blink when I would park the car (before I took it to the dealership). It runs better after they replaced all the stuff, but the light is still on and I still have the missfires. That probably accounts for the HP being so bad!

Someone told me that it could be the Oxygen sensors, but they were tested to be good. I think they should be replaced every 40k miles or so.

Other than that, I have no idea what the problem is!

ps- The first time I changed the spark plugs, they were from autozone, the second time they changed them at the dealership and they were Hyundai parts.

It sounds like you crossed /mixed up 2 plug wires.
The flashing check engine light is a telling you that emission damage is being done. The poor gas mpg and lack of power is because 2 or more plugs are firing and the wrong time. Reinstall the plug wires in the correct firing order

Hello!
I think that you've already solved the problem by now but I just wanted to let you know that I had the same problem with my 2000 Elantra.I bought the expensive sparkplugs from autozone and then I had to buy the originals from Hyundai.
Goog luck!
