97 Dodge Grand Caravan Handicapped - Electrical
According to Dodge dealer, they say a BCM is not functioning properly but I'm noticing that I have trouble when there is water on the road (rain or snow).
What's happening -- 1. Automatic door locks unlock and lock on their own (with and WITHOUT key in ignition). 2. At this time, when I put the breaks on my backup lights light up 3. Sometimes my windshield wipers start to go back and forth. I take off the battery cable and let it stand overnight or several nights and reattach the battery cable in the morning to go to work. This sometimes stops the door locks from doing their thing. But right now the backup lights are coming on everytime I use the break pedal. This is a HANDICAPPED VAN but that area has been taken out of the system and it continues to do the above. Does anyone know how I can find out which body control module would cause this or know how to find a repair manual? I'm also wondering if it might not be the BCM but wires getting wet!!! HELP -- My dodge dealer says, "Next time I bring it in, I have to pay per hour" The last time it was in they had it for 2 days and they said it would've cost $1200. Pauline |

Re: 97 Dodge Grand Caravan Handicapped - Electrical
The BCM is a black box located under the hood on the passenger side. It's a microprocessor that controls all body related functions like wipers, lights, chimes, door locks, etc.
If you wish to avoid alot of fustration, try a replacement BCM (match the year of the van if you get one from a junk yard). I'm surprised the Dodge Dealer didn't try to sell you one. I understand they cost $300 or so. At one time, I did have a simular water related weird problems (only with the engine computer instead of the BCM). I used to dread rain clouds on the horizon - my engine would misfire from the moisture in the air. Replaced everything electrical under the hood. Even knowing the problem (moisture) and where it had to be (computer), no amount of cleaning contacts could get that bugger out. I eventually got a junk yard replacement computer and the problem went away. |

OK, if that is indeed the case, the dealer and about 8 other people have been informing me wrong. The BCM is located behind the driver side fuse box. I have spare BCM's sitting in front of me now. I am not sure what you are removing from under the hood, but I am 99+% sure it is not a BCM. If your BCM # is P4686924 then I have one I can sell you for a rasonable price. Otherwise, the dealer will be glad to sell you one for a less than reasonable price. www.car-part.com sells them from anywhere between 150-500.00. I have been going through similar problems and have been tracking it down now for several weeks. Good luck |
