If it is any help I'm only on my second one. 1985. I replaced the original only 3 years back.

My Toyota Camry Story:

I thought I was going to get a better quality job by going directly to an alternator rebuilder, rather than a parts house.

What a frigging mistake that turned out to be...
They replaced the regulator, put some pretty silver paint all over the thing, and that's what they called rebuilt.

Went back to that f'n place six times!! I finally gave up, told them to remove their parts from my alternator and left with a full refund.

Turns out the diode bank was partially fried, they don't replace that one in a rebuild, so it kept frying the regulator over a few hours of extreme load, "ALT" light !!

Got me a junkyard alternator for $15 that's been running fine for years now.
