98 Camara Overheating

Ok, I just been reading through threads on this issue. My brother's 98 V6 is overheating. Took cap off, no circulation, just spits out water. Put cap on, when temp got hot again, turned off, we saw some water coming off hose located at very bottom left side of engine (or passengers side). Not sure if water came from pump but did notice something wet around crank shaft. This leak will not occur everytime i do this test. Question is if the pump is not working, wouldn't you alway hear the squealing noise that you usually get? Or, if the thermostat does not open, will this cause enough pressure to cause the waterpump gasket to blow? Help and or advise appreciated.

Chked, and Oil looks fine, and coolant level is full..
