Hello, I'm new to the Silverado world and have a few questions. I just bought a 2000 Z71 and I have noticed that when I start it cold, it hesitates just alittle when I take off. No problems after it has been running awhile. Being slightly ignorant to mechanics, I noticed, when in park, the truck idled at around 500 RPM, which seemed low to me. (After speaking to the dealership today, they said that was normal). So I adjusted the screw to make it idle around 1000 RPM. When I started it this morning it would idle at 500 again, even though I didn't back out the screw. Question 1, do these trucks "self adjust" or should I be concerned, and should I back the screw back out to where it was. Question 2, any ideas on what could cause the hesitation. I've done alittle research and thought it could be the fuel pressure regulator, but like I said before, I'm alittle mechanically challenged.
Actually one more question, it also seems to shift hard from 1st to 2nd gear when I take off very slowly. But if I take off faster it shifts smooth. The dealership said this is normal, but I want to make sure they are not trying to give me the run around. Thanks in advance for the help. |

Re: 2000 Silverado hesitation
Root, as for the cold start I cant tell you whats going on, but the harsh shifting from 1st-2nd all I can say is WELCOME TO CHEVY. Im not sure why but all of the 99 newer chevys can have that prob. I have an 03 z71 does the same damn thing since day 1. But all the GMC's Ive driven dont, not that I remember. So I wouldnt worry, just get used to it. Im sure others will agree.

Thanks guys. Faze3, it does seem like it is going to die and actually once I started it and it choked alittle and died. It immediately started back up and I had no problems. As far as the lights, I guess I didn't pay attention. ( probably because I have only had the truck a week and I was alittle freaked out when it died). It's amazing the things you notice after you buy a vehicle that you didn't notice during the test drive. I would really appreciate the pictures, I'm sure it's worth a try.
Thanks for the info on the transmission. I wasn't sure if I needed to have the dealer check it out. I've been told it could possibly be a "spring and ball valve" worn out. |

Re: 2000 Silverado hesitation
First off , is it just me or does anyone else not see a post from faze3 ? ? ROOT was post #1 , sledneck781 was #2 . ROOT #3 and 4 ?? , that is what i see anyhow.
Anyhow ROOT , the idle is computer controlled , you can not adjust it. Being a 2000 it could be time for a tune up and a good cleaning of the throttle body, i would say start with the throttle body first. That may even solve the problem. These trucks are bad for running like crap if the TB gets a little dirty.

Kenny-1907, thanks, I think I will try to clean the TB. As far as the post from faze3, I swear it was there at one point. He asked me if the truck died or if the lights dimmed. But I agree, it is not there anymore. I may be crazy, but not even I could make that post up.

Re: 2000 Silverado hesitation
Heh. I posted a post, re-read ROOT's and realized mine wasn't what he was talking about, so I deleted it literally 2 or 3 minutes later.
I was asking if what he was experiencing was similar to my issue regarding a dirty throttle body. The gist of it was my explaining how to clean the throttle body and how to determine if his truck was on the verge of stalling by looking at the alt meter and the headlights, since that's what mine was doing. My headlights would dim and then brighten when I gave it gas and my alt gauge would drop until I gave it gas. This fixed it. ROOT: I'll try to take some pics (if you really need 'em - if you can change your oil, you can do this) showing how to clean the throttle body this weekend. My father-in-law and I are building a patio cover and since it's also Easter Weekend, we're taking the kids to some Easter Egg hunts. Here's the basic how-to again 1. Remove the cleaner from the throttle body (joins the engine immediately behind the fan 2. Take a CLEAN rag and spray the cleaner on it (I used some from 3M - similar directions should be on the bottle) 3. Wipe both sides of the valve down 4. Repeat until rag comes back clean 5. Spray some cleaner inside throttle body 6. Prop open valve with handle of screwdriver 7. Allow cleaner to evaporate. (What I did at this point was change my oil. ) 8. Replace cleaner 9. Start engine. May hesitate first couple/few tries. When you spray the cleaner in the throttle body, you may want to place a rag under the throttle body to make sure that you don't drip any down on the belts below, just to be safe (no idea if it'd do any damage to 'em, but you never know) |

faze3, thanks for the clarification about your post. I'm new here and I don't want people thinking I'm seeing posts that weren't really there. Don't worry about the pics, I'm sure I can figure it out. Thanks again.
