Going Crazy?

Am i going crazy or what? I think im just scaring myself i jsut need reassurance. Ive heard of 240s having ticking but not until like 160k+ miles. Im at 140k... and I dont hear the noise when im in my car hardly...but with the window down i can hear it and when im outside the car and when the hood is popped. Its a ticking but shouldnt a valve tick get progressively worse? Man....just had a friend blow a water pump and another throw a rod...I really dont wanna be in that boat!

Define "tick". Does it actually sound like vavle tick from the top of the engine or does it sound like it's coming from someplace else?

Also, given hydraulic lash adjusters, a common explanation for valve tick is low oil level. Check the easy stuff first.

Re: Going Crazy?

or its just the infamous timing chain guide tick. Common, all 3 240's at my house do it. Some worse than other though. All you have to do is remove the guides. The tick sounds as if its coming from right up front of the head right??

yea...

I know im not low on oil. I think i remember putting my head down near the head and wanna say it sounded like Back of 2nd or Front of 3rd cylinder....But if its the chain guides how easy are those to replace and how would i tell if its them when i took it apart? Just the wear on them?

I Got The Same Noise
But I Started To Hear It When I Changed The Waterpump
I Thought It Was A Loose Belt Cus I Hear When The Rpm's Go
Down, Like If Its Loose Bearing Or Valve
I Checkd The Belt, Tested It And Its Fine
Im Thinking Of Taking The Pump Off And Running The Engine To See If Thats My Problem.i Doubt Its A Chain Guide U Wont Get A
Ticking Sound.

Re: Going Crazy?

If it is the chain, don't worry about it to much, it won't break or anything, but if you wanna have it fixed, it's a bitch and it's expensive, well on an Altima, I dunno about a 240, prolly similar.

Re: Going Crazy?

im telling you its prolly the guides. I heard a story of one guy having his chain guide fall off in his head, and it was just sitting there rubbing his chain making the noise. I think its fairly easy to take the guides actually off. But if your going to do the whole chain, well then....
I think there are just a couple of screws that hold them on. I dont know ill try to find where i read this info.
