Distortion.

i bought a pair of brand new 6x9's and hooked them up. when i play music at almost full volume, they begin to distort. is this because my head unit is reaching its max amps and not playing clearly? to fix this should i buy a amp so i can turn the amp up and not the head unit to get higher volume and thus having the HU play at lower amps and playing clearly?

thanks.

AMPERES: a measure of current, aka AN amp or 100amp current draw

Why did you buy 6x9's...do you listen to us here?

I just...don't have anything else to say at the moment...

Re: Distortion.

An amplifier may provide more power and cleaner power than a wimpy onboard Head Unit amplifier. If you insist, look into a small 2-channel amplifier that will provide the necessary RMS and I do stress RMS wattage...pay NO attention to peak. Then you will still need to set the gains correctly to ensure the amp does not clip or distort. peace

Re: Distortion.

It depends on whether the distortion is electrical (clipping) or mechanical (bottoming). If it's electrical then yes an amp would fix it, if it's mechanical then no it won't. Does your headunit have a built in highpass filter? Is it on?

Re: Distortion.

i know my 6x9s can handle 220 RMS max. so i found this amp that puts out 150 RMS watts though 2 channels.

http://www.millionbuy.com/prfha600.html

i know its not close to the 220 RMS watts my speakers can handle but i dont want to blow them. should this get rid of my distortion?

if you can find any better amps (around that price) please link me to them.

Re: Distortion.

that amp does 100x2, and your speakers can't handle 220rms, that I promise you

Re: Distortion.

Your speakers are probably more like 50Rms so you need an amp that will put our 50x2 at 4 ohm or so, if that will even solve your problems.

Re: Distortion.

Hmm Audiobahn.

Those speakers say they handle 200W rms, but that is definatly over-rated, however you're probably still underpowering them. Also, if you turn the volume up near max on your head unit, your probably clipping the amp and it will sound like ass. Audiobahn sounds like ass anyway, so its like ass^2 sound. Get some new speakers and a new amp would be my advice if you want to turn it up that loud.

and the speakers are 4ohm, so the amp's 2ohm power rating is meaningless

those audiobahns are 50-80rms speakers, no more. They have a tendency to grossly overrate all of their products so they can sell more to people who don't know better. Another good example is the 25-20k frequency response, those speakers couldn't play 25hz to save their life, I promise you, just like they couldn't handle 200rms for any more than a half a second before blowing.

Any decent amp that puts out 75wx2 at 4ohm...we have a list, you find it, the search feature is your friend....
