2000 Windstar Codes P0161, P0171, and P0174

Okay, the check engine light has been on for quite some time. I took it to a non factory mechanic. They changed the O2 sensors, but the light came right back on. I called them, they said they were embarassed, but when they called the dealer they told em there was some fuse that needed to be replaced. I took it back and they replaced the "fuse", but it came right back on. Anyway, the subject tells you the codes I got. What do you recommend? I read that I should check the vacuum lines and check the mass airflow sensor. I've pretty much checked the vacuum lines, but I will still try to shoot them with starting fluid. I will also clean the MAS.

Replies are much appreciated.

Thanks,

DiverDuane

Re: 2000 Windstar Codes P0161, P0171, and P0174

Codes 171 and 174 indicate lean condition on banks #1 and 2 respectively.....usually a vaccum leak....or dirty MAF...

Code 161 is DOWNSTREAM oxygen sensor circuit malfunction....Bank #2. The Downstream oxygen sensor is the sensor that is AFTER the Catalytic converter. Bank # 2......I think....someone correct me if I am wrong.......the FRONT bank......if so....that would be the FRONT catalytic converter.
Check to make sure that the wiring is NOT against the exhaust pipes....or catalytic converter. Also, unplug.....and inspect the connections....and plug them back in. There are 3 connections to oxygen sensors that are close to each other.....all the sensors, except the one that is just below the Front exhaust manifold.

To clean the MAF, use Non-residue Electronic cleaner. Do a searh on MAF.....I have given some specific instructions on how to do it in several threads.

You probably want to read this thread and others on the P0171/P0174 errors on your 2000, this is a common error and the thread should have links and info:
