I've been trying to change the air filter but all the numbers at the stores are wrong. The filter they say fits is several inches too long. On a hunch I tried the filter for the 6cyl and it was almost the correct size except for small cutouts on the bottom which kept it from seating all the way. Anyone have an idea??? I guess my next call is to the dealer.

Re: 2004 Legacy Air Box
Just take the old filter into the store with you and compare sizes/shapes. Filters aren't an exact science, so as long as it doesn't have any major gaps you should be OK.

Uh, I thought of that one all on my own. Still the filters that fit Subys don't fit. And yes -gaps in the filter housing no matter how small DO matter. You may not mind craping up your system but I do. Getting fine dirt and junk in your engine will severely shorten it's life.

Can get you a new OEM filter for $16.50. You can get a Green filter for $50.

Re: 2004 Legacy Air Box
AHHHHHH! I finally have the answer! Subaru came out with a 3 type of filter for the Legacy! I spoke to the dealer and they have had tons of calls from various oil change shops and parts stores. Go figure- anything to force you back to the dealer!
