98 chevy venture lifter noise?

I have a loud lifter noise only on start up and then after engine is warmed up the noise stops. I would like some opinions before I pay a mechanic for something I don't need. Since I am a female, I get taken quite often in this department. (oil pump, bad lifters?) Please help

Re: 98 chevy venture lifter noise?

Hello dbestnindy,
There may be restrictions in the oil pathway to your lifters and valvetrain. Have your local oil change shop do a engine flush before changing the oil. This procedure helps clean the oil pathways.
Hopefully, this will solve the problem.

the valve in an oil filter can cause this. after the engine is off, the valve "leaks" and allows the lifters to loose there prime.

WIX filters are great. I would just get an oil change and ask for a WIX filter (all auto stores carry them) - see if that cures the problem.

thats why at start up - you get the tapping noise and a few minutes later you lifters get primed again and the tapping noise goes away.

Re: 89 chevy venture lifter noise?

Thanks for all the help. We took the van in for an estimate and answer. They said $1100 and we needed new lifters. The good news, after reading posts, did an oil change and a new filter. Guess what, no more ticking. THANKS A BUNCH!

Re: 89 chevy venture lifter noise?

just out of curiosity - did you ask for a WIX filter?
or did you do a flush?

Re: 89 chevy venture lifter noise?

No, the filter is whatever an oil change place uses. It is my daughter's van but I did tell her about the WIX filter for the future and the same for my vehicle. The oil gets changed regularly so maybe it was just a faulty oil filter. Must have been. How about that. I never would have come up with that one. Thanks for the input.
