Question Oh No :-( New problem??

Hey Guys,

1995
Aurora
149,000 miles

Last night my shifter was acting really weird. When I change gears I had to use a lot of force to move the stupid stick and select a gear. It kept getting harder and harder and finally something popped and the shifter slides as it should... except the car doesn't respond. It's stuck in park no matter what gear I have it in. I took the center console out and the shifter cable it attached, and moves back and forth, so the problem must be at the other end, the transmission. Yikes. Anyone have this problem before? My car is stuck in a parking lot right now, I'm thinking I should tow it to the dealer. Is the repair gonna be expensive? What parts could be bad? I'm hoping, praying, doing voodoo, whatever it takes to make this an an easy fix like a pin fell out or something.

If I were to guess... I would say that the cable is old and either has gotten rusty or frayed inside the sheathing somewhere after the console... thus making it hard to move the lever... once it got so hard it gave way and broke. Have someone move the shifter in the car and watch the little arm on the trannsmission to see if it is moving.... if it's not then the cable will need replaced or looked at closer... if it does move... then u got problems.

The cable doesnt move the little thing on the transmission, however, I can't move the thing on the transmission manually.... hence the cable broke, because it got stuck somewhere in he tranny. I got it towed to the dealer. This is gonna suck :-(

Regular mechanic there won't even look at it.... tomorrow the "tranny specialist" will look at it.
