BOV sound frequency in an automatic turbo DSM

My 17 year old neighbour is going nuts over my spyder (such is the seductory power of DSMs!!!), and has convinced his parents to get him a 2g too... and IVE done my part to make sure he gets a Spyder GST ...NO GSX this time guys, lol.

Now this kid has little ricer blood in his genes, lol, but he does want a turbo (because he went insane when I took him for a spin, and heard all the spooling and BOV noises, lol)), so I can respect that, but he cant drive stick and wants an auto.

My question from him to you: Does having an AUTO tranny turbo affect the intensity of the BOV sound (if you have an aftermarket BOV like the type S) as compared to manual?

it wont blow off when its shifts in a auto. it will still make noise if you let off the gas though

The sound will be the same. Only difference is when he lets of the throttle you will hear the BOV instead of every shift.

Re: BOV sound intensity in an automatic turbo DSM

yeah, thats what I actually meant...I think I shouldve said "frequency of BOV sounds" instead. I guess there's less opportunity to show-off the BOV sound in an auto than in stick shift, which isnt what the kid really wants. Guess I better let him know that either "Stick it" or get walkin'.

Teach him to drive stick, it's really not that hard at all once you learn the basics.

The turbo spooling sound is better on an auto when you power brake A nice whine...

Re: BOV sound intensity in an automatic turbo DSM

I second teach him to drive stick. If he knows how to drive already it's not all that bad. I got my car and told myself this was all I was going to drive (2 weeks ago now). I did not have someone to teach me. I actually read a bunch of articles online and figured it out. It didn't take long since no matter what I had to drive it to school/work daily even if I stalled at every light on the way...

I was extremely frustrated at first and was doubting my decision on purchasing the car. Now that I can drive it I'm very very very happy with my decision. So I think you should teach him. If he absolutely hates it he can always sell for an auto but I think he might just learn to love it alot. I know i did.

I felt the same way with my first car, it was a 4-spd transmission. After about 2 days of trying to learn how to drive the damn thing right I almost said "God fuck this I'm getting an auto."

I'm glad I didn't.

Re: BOV sound intensity in an automatic turbo DSM

Yeah my first car was a 4-speed as well, I loved that thing. I beat the shit out of it, haha. I miss it. Plus it was the easiest clutch I have ever driven, so then once I got that down it was easy to drive any other standard as well.

I would hate myself if I had an auto, take the afternoon and learn how to drive a standard, it isnt that hard.

Re: BOV sound intensity in an automatic turbo DSM

I taught myself how to drive manual on a 1979 F-150 custom 4 speed.
The Auto will have the same spooling noise when accelerating as a manual but doesn't go psssshh when shifting... but if you accelarate hard and let off when boost has built up and let off the gas so the throttle plate shuts you will still get the pssssh... it's fun to do next to some spota with his window down... kinda makes his head spin a bit!!! lol

Re: BOV sound intensity in an automatic turbo DSM

I agree with teaching him how to drive stick. In fact I feel that everyone should learn. Imagine if something "wild" were to happen and your only option were to drive someone elses car....and it just happened to be stick.
