Brake boost/brake switch access help needed

I need help in accessing the brake booster and brake switch in my 98 tahoe. The booster is bad and has to be replaced, but I can not seem to access the brake switch to remove the booster arm attachment. I have noticed the steering column has a bolt that attaches it about 8 to 10 inches before the firewall, if I remove this bolt will it allow me to "telescope" the steering column up out of the way? And gain better access to the brake switch and the four bolts securing the booster to the firewall? PLEASE HELP.
