more painting tips

I guess that I'm hoping that movin2stereo will help me out here and possibly others that might be in the same spot. Thanks in advance

I'm just getting my Blazer ready for paint, and it has several rust patches so I'm sanding most of it to the metal.

However I've got a new front end (hood, fenders, and rad suport) going on at the same time, and 2 clean used doors.

I'm wondering if I'm best off to sand the new panels off and use the same primer, sealer, and paint throughout the truck? or am I better off just painting over the pre primed surface? Is their primer any good to start with?

And then with the used doors, am I best off to sand the paint down to the primer, or just scuff it?

I just want to do the best job that I can myself and keep the costs down.

Thanks everyone.

Re: more painting tips

Leave the primer on the new parts, always. At PPG school they tell esle to leave that primer on and that it is better than anything you can buy over the counter. What I do with new parts is scuff the inside with a red scuff pad and wet sand the out side with 400.Now your used parts. You only have to sand out any chips or rust marks or any other flaw.Remember once you sand something out it is best to prime it then.If the doors are in good shape do the same as I describe for the new parts..Again what is on there is O.K..

Thanks movin2. It's what I kinda thought, but I didn't want to mess up. Plus it's my first time ever dealing with new, parts, and a vehicle that's had to be sanded right down

I forgot to add that if these parts are aftermarket, be sure to run a uni-bit through the feder bolt holes. The uni-bits I use go up to 1/2 inch and that's plently enough(sometimes). This will give you some adjustment room as jap fenders aren't true.Do this first and then edge your parts.

Thanks movin2, I would have messed up there for sure. I got the parts for dirt cheap from a bodyshop that just got sold (175 canadian for everything) so I'm sure that they're off-shore

Re: more painting tips

Another thing,if they are aftermakets be sure to rust proof them. That jap metal rusts away pretty quickly. It wouldn't even hurt if you sprayed the insides down with used motor oil after they have been put on and painted of course.Spray the insides of the doors down too untill it runs out the bottom.Yes it's messy as hell but it will preserve your ride.I spray the insides of bedsides, doors, fenders, rockers, tailgate.Let it run out for a couple of days and then wipe off what is seen.Your first couple washings you will see more coming out but it will subside. Some may laugh, but used motor is the best kind of rustproofing you can get.It gets in where water does and creeps into cracks(like door bottoms where the skin folds over the inside of the door).Once oil is in there though,
water can't lay in these spots. Before you spray though make sure everything is dry.So it can get a good bite.

Re: more painting tips

way back when I swung wrenches for a Ford dealership (yes ford) we charged good money rust proofing with our used oil.

I also have to take a flat file to the inside of the hood. Those edges are sharp, and I just about cut myself lifting it in and out of the trailer.
I wonder why they would have shipped a hood with sharp edges knowing that everyone has to open it?

Re: more painting tips

Well it looks like my truck body work is over for a while, until I catch the assholes that stole my new mig welder... one on one... one at a time

Then the world will be less 3 assholes.

I live in a town of 600 people, and 600 people close by. The cops know who these theives are and still do nothing

And their MOM is a priest, and claim that HER ASSHOLE CHILDREN are ANGELS

she used to be good friends with my mom, who stuck up for them, until the priest ripped her off for less than 500 bux

more painting tips

you also want to make sure you are using a welding primer when you weld, and also if you sand any parts down to bear metal that you use a self_etching primer to prevent future rust from appearing and making your bubble later on

Both aid in rust prevention, but do not prevent rust from happening.

Re: more painting tips

Thanks for the tips guys.
I did know most of that stuff EXTREME02 but it's always a nice refresher.
Plus I was hoping that others could use this info to help themselves

Well they might have found my welder, since they just raided a theives house full of stolen property... after they caught the prick stealing a.... NEW HUMMER He kept on running on the rims after they spiked the tires, and they kept on ramming him until they finally somehow stopped him.
I saw the hummer in the impound yard yesterday and it's a write off.

I should have a newspaper clipping within a week (only a weekly newspaper here)

I'm hopefull but the cops haven't notified me yet. If they have it I should be able to finish my bodywork in the next 2 weeks, unless they keep my welder for evidence. If they don't find it I'll just have to raise the $650.00 for the replacement

Thanks once again
