Re: what would cause an backfire...threw the intake?

93 4.3 cpi........full tune up like 4000 miles ago....except cap and rotor.
which the mech said looked fine..........
i looked at that thread about the backfire/intake....the problem.....was differnt than mine...actually the opposite........his prob was at low rpm./..mine is at high..........so i figured it might be a differnt prob.
but ima replace that cap/roter tomorrow....and see what happens.

Are you getting any error codes, like the check engine light is on? I so, check the code. Also, you may want to check the EGR system. I had two error codes at the same time that I fixed in one day. One was a bad Throttle Position Sensor and the other Exhaust Gas Recirculation. I had a vacuum line that broke right after the EGR solenoid and the thing ran like crap, coughing, sputtering, backfiring through the intake, and I fixed both those things and now it runs like a champ.

Re: what would cause an backfire...threw the intake?

nope no error codes.....replaced the egr from an engine with much lower miles....was pretty carbon free....and the plunger thing was moving freely.....that was just like 1000 miles ago..i dont think it got clogged that fast.......
ignition coil...humm
how hard is that to replace? cost?

Re: what would cause an backfire...threw the intake?

Just follow the center distributer wire back to it's source and that's the coil.

They're cheap, probably 20-30 bux I had a almost new one on my spare parts truck so I can't say for sure

Re: what would cause an backfire...threw the intake?

does it ever buck or jerk back when you shut it off, or does it come to a nice stop when the key is turned off?

Re: what would cause an backfire...threw the intake?

Before replacing the coil, put a cap and rotor on it. Much cheaper and MUCH more likely the problem.
