'97 - Speedometer problems/battery light

I have a 97 5.0 V8 with 2 ongoing problems.

The first just started about 2 weeks ago. My speedometer suddenly stopped working. It's very intermittent and doesn't matter if the car is warm or cold. I took it in to the mechanic who said it was the 'speed sensor' and they replaced it. Problem still happens. Brought it back and they ran with it for the day and of course it never stopped working. Any ideas?

The second problem is my battery light. This is also somewhat intermittent, but recently it's more on than off. I've had the alternator replaced twice and the battery replaced - no help. I'm leaning towards a short in the display, but I don't know who to take it to for that.

Any help I can get would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like it is a wiring problem on both. Not sure where on the speed sensor. If you like, I can post link with wiring diagram on it. The battery light may also be wiring. There is a wire on alternator that controls the light. If these are loose, it can cause the problem you describe. Same offer of wiring diagram.

Re: '97 - Speedometer problems/battery light

Thanks Way2Old.

I guess I need to find someone who does electrical work and see if they can figure it out. I can live with the battery light, but it's frustrating to have the speedometer suddenly stop while you're driving.
