Question is it any good?

am thinking of trading for a 200? explorer with the 4.0 v-6, and the traction assist 4wd. what is the pros and cons of this type of 4wd, and is it about the same as 4wd, or is it more like the limited slip rearends. i noticed that this 4wd runs off of cv axles, but what type of transfer case. it is really rwd, and the front kicks in when needed, right. it is electronic shift also. vehicle has high mileage, but it is all highway miles, and it has been taken to dealer everytime serviced. can trade a dodge caravan for it. would it be worth the trade? mine also has high mileage.

Re: is it any good?

my complaint with my 2002 Eddie, V8 4x4 is that the 4wd can simply NOT be turned off. Even when in 2 HI the 4wd will automattically kick in when it slips.

I am sure this is fine and safe for many but on a road with patches of ice/snow it kicks in and out like it is confused, 2wd would be fine in this situation around the neighborhood! I have concern the engaging might make it wear faster too.

Re: is it any good?

i have a 2002 with the 4.0, have not noticed the 4x4 kicking in when not needed. it is "on demand" and does it automatically if needed. you are right, the 2002-2004 use the new 5 speed automatic with electric shift. i have had no problems. i changed the trans oil and filter at 40,000, have 50,000 now. Really like the 4 wheel independant suspension, rides like a car. Gets 19 MPG. have a few of the nuisance problems like ABS light on 1 day a week, crack in rear tailgate plastic, etc. no big problems. Traded off a 1998 Caravan for it.
