98 GT engine swap question
I have the 2.4l engine in my GT right now, I want to know if the V6, I think there are 2 (3100, and 3400) if either would swap in with my manual tranny? Anyone know? I want the added horse power, plus the supercharger im looking at would be alot better on the 3100 or 3400 compaired to my 2.4l. Thanks everyone
PS. Would I need anything special for the swap? Engine mounts different? Logan |

The 3100 should be able to just drop into the car since the 96-98 had the 3100 in it already. The 3400 is a 99+ g/a engine if i recall correctly. As far as connecting to the 5 speed, you can do it, but it won't be a simple bolt together and go. There is a lot of piecing together of various other cars parts to get that to work properly, not really worth it. I don't remember the exact config. but i do remember that there was a post in the past about this being done. you may want to look into it. I woudl stick with the 2.4 with the 5 speed.

why stick with 2.4?
I have been told from my mechanic that the 2.4 is a lemon, and I have to say this car has had it share of troubles since it was bought.
Why would you recommend the 2.4? Logan |

I just making the suggestion to stick with the 2.4 since you were asking about making a 3100/3400 manual. I've heard good and bad about the 2.4 even though every engine has their share of problems. The main thing I've been hearing is that they don't hold up as well and tend to break down faster then a 3100 or 3400... but again depends on many factors.... I've never owned or driven a 2.4L So i can't say one way or another. I do have to say that i liked the 3100 better in my friends G/A.

Re: 98 GT engine swap question
They don't mate 6cyl FWD cars with manual transaxles for a reason: It won't fit. If you can do it, cool. It would be neat to see. The 6cyl block may be too long for the engine bay if mated to the 5spd.

I find it difficult to believe they'd have changed the bolt pattern, so you might just have to find an earlier trans. Worth checking into |

Re: 98 GT engine swap question
Yeah, this is true the earlier versions did have them didn't they? Hmmm, I'll have to look into this and find out why. As far as earlier, I find the 2.4l to be a fantastic engine, it is limited by certain issues like balance shafts, but that is easily remedied and the engine can produce gobs of power with the right tuning. Stock is only 10HP shy of the 6cyl. You can safely run a Quad up to around 275HP without having to worry about reliability, change the pistons and rods and that number doubles. Not very many 4cyl can claim that.
