motor is blown!

My Engine was knocking last week, and the other day i shifted into second and blew a hole in the block. I didnt drive it that hard, and changed the oil every 3,000 miles. Buying a used d16y8 on tuesday for $550 with 80k on the motor, just wondering what rpms can i safely shift using my vtec on the sohc that it wond damage my motor again? Im assuming whoever had my motor before me must have driven the shit out of it, cause i bought the car it had 79k on it and it blew with 89k on it now. Or are those d16y8's just not made to shift at 6,000 rpms in second and third gear?

Re: motor is blown!

Revving it wouldn't blow a hole in the block......someone had screwed w/ something, maybe fuel management by means of a cam or something and when you revved it, it started to predetonate and that's why you wrecked it. I have a D16Y8, provided mine is a little beefier than yours, but still, i can rev it to 7500 w/o incident. I know of many other people that do it daily and have no problems.

Revving your car doesn't make the block blow out necessarily...when you rev your car, there are normally three rpm ranges wherein the engine is slightly out of balance. That is why cars have redlines...the third section of out-of-balance is in the redline range or slightly above it.
If you get engine balanced, you could rev it a lot higher w/o any problems. I would really doubt that simply revving it caused the hole in the block.

You said the car started to knock before it blew....that says to me that it was somehow predetonating or something was amiss. If you tear it down, i'm sure that you'll find the source of the problem, otherwise, you'll have to settle for my speculation.

Post more back as you find out what happened.

Re: motor is blown!

i agree, something wasn't right, and a knock before, could have spun bearing...or like he said...pre detonation...tear it down and see whats up...but on my y8 all i did was head work and i can rev up 2 8600 no problem...

Re: motor is blown!

well now, preignition or detonation. no sutch thing as predetonation. also, a spun bearing does not make a knocking noise at all, its a blood chilling screeching noise.

as for the cause, it could have been as simple as a clogged fuel filter causing low fuel pressure, and causing u to run lean. that would cause preignition and/or detonation. both of those r catastrophic to an engine. if it happens enough it can easily blow a whole in sumthin or melt things as well. it'd be a good idea to open the engine and take a gander. it's already dead so y not.
