1996 LS blazer 4 door trans problem?

I last had problems with tapping sound, was advised I needed new engine. Turned out, it was blown intake gaskets, and radiator fluid was runnign right into engine. Causing tapping noise. Was a lot of sludge in there too. Had valve covers taken off and sludge cleaned out, and return lines cleaned out. Ran oil through with truck idling, and came out ok. Buttoned up, and ran well. Trans oil was dirty though. Had that changed, and was told the shifter forks(???) could fall apart with new trans oil. Took a chance, changed oil, ran well for a week. Got out on highway, went about an hour or so, and heard a slight tapping noise, and noticed rpms were a bit high. Pulled over and opened hood while truck idled, and heard the tapping from down below engine. Triued turning around and getting back home, but the rpms soared, and the trans didnt seem to be shifting. It did, for like two gears but only after a long rev and high rpm, then truck died and pulled off to side. Waited, tried to start, and the engine wouldnt start. It clicked, but wouldnt turn over. Any ideas as to what this could be? Does this sound like trans or motor?

How long did you over rev the engine for?

Not very long. I didnt rev anywhere near the redzone. I maybe made it 1/4 mile?

The temperature seemed normal, the pressure seemed to drop, but thats when the engine cut out and it was coasting. I had roughly 40-45 on oil pressure guage.
Dont know if theres coolant in the oil now. I dont think so, as there was coolant in overflow container, about same level as before the short trip.

Remove the oil dipstick and check to see if the oil is cloudy.

Check your battery voltage with a voltmeter.

Have it at a local shop. they are saying it sounds like the bearings came loose in lower end. Does this sound right? Any idea of what the cost would be to fix something like this? Can the bearings just be replaced? Or does this require whole bottom end? or what?

Significant work....

When you replace the rod / crank bearings you will automatically want to replace other things due to an obivious lubrication problem....you could be talking camshaft bearings....rings...

If there was coolant in the motor, good chance the coolant washed away an oil film on bearings, coupled with a "rev" condition...could be significant damage.

Rebuilding a motor from a shop can be REAL pricey at $100/hour....condiser a rebuilt short-block, bone-yard used motor, or doing all the work yourself i.e. or a buddy etc.

when you add up all the parts, gaskets, time, it will be expensive....

Technically, you will be rebuilding the engine.

Tell them to give you a price.
