Oil - What do you use?

When it comes to oil witch is better. patrolium based or synthetic. and if you go from patrolium to synthetic do you have to do any special steps besides change your oil and filter.. do you have to flush your system?

If you know please let me know.. and if you have any suggestions on oil please let me know

Right now im using Pinzoil 10W40

Re: Oil - What do you use?

No you don't need to do anything special when switching from different types of oil, that's a myth. the only thing you don't want to do is mix them, say 2qts of conventional & 1.50qts of synthetic.

I personally use Mobil 1 synthetic or Penzoil Synthetic.

10w-40 is too thick for your engine. 0w-30, 5w-30, or 10w-30 should be used. thicker oil robbs your engine of power and a little 4 banger doesn't need that. Plus it doesn't flow as it should.

Re: Oil - What do you use?

10w-40 is not too thick for your engine. especially for synthetic which they say is a thinner oil to begin with.

turbo companies recommend 20w-50 when using turbos

Not mixing synthetic and conventional is another myth. There is nothing wrong with doing it. Most oil companies sell "blended oil" that is 70% conventional and 30% synthentic.

it's plenty warm down here near new orleans, even in the winter, to use 10w40. in fact, that's what i almost always used to use, until i realized that 10W30 actually seemed to save me a litte bit on gas milage.

recently i switched to synthetic. first i tried one of those synthetic blends, mentioned above, with no special flushing in between. i'd never even heard of the myths of not mixing them. the additives people use, and "oil treatments" are often synthetic oils, so why would i need to flush? anyway, at the next oil change i went to full synthetic. i figured i'd give it a try, dispite the total money i spent on the oil change being more than twice what i normally spend. i even got one of those super duper Fram X2 filters that come in a can. weird.

anyway, long story short, i've noticed no performance difference or gas milage increase or decrease between conventional, blended, and pure synthetic oils. someone explained to me, however, that synthetic oils, supposedly, do not leave harmful deposits in the engine like conventional oils do. oh well. 15 year old car. no way to tell now.

Re: Oil - What do you use?

syncromesh for tranny fluid.

i run synthetic blend in my car. i run a 10w-40. hawaii never gets that cold. they say synthetic is thinner which is why you shouldnt use it in old high mileage cars because it gets past the rings mroe so you burn more oil. thats just what i heard.
