Is it worth it?
Car: 1989 Toyota Camry SV21 - 3S-FE
I bought my camry around 8-10 months ago and in this time it has converted from a decent drive to a clanking oil leaking machine. The Camry cost me $1500(au) and this is the list of problems it now has and how much I have been quoted for some of the repairs. front lower control arm bushes inner and outer need replacing ($380) rear brake cylinders and shoes ($300) front shocks ($275) rear shocks ($275) on top of this it has a power stearing leak, the motor has developed a bit of a rattle and in the mornings it will take a good 2-3 kilometers before the auto trans will change into the top gear. I'm seriously thinking weather I should bother fixing this car or just try and sell it and hopefully get my money back on it. |

Re: Is it worth it?
Don't try to do everything at once. Drop the tranny pan first and replace the fluid/filter. Dont try to make the car something its not. Do a little at a time. Serious stuff first.

Re: Is it worth it?
The transmission not shifting into high gear for 2-3 kilometers is normal. This is a computer controled automatic transmission. It moniters engine temperature and keeps it out of high gear until the engine has reached a certain temperature. This promotes faster warmups and saves a bit of fuel in the long run.
As far as other advice, it might help to know the current mileage/kilometers on the car. Mike |

The Car has done 314069(kms). I can get the inner and outer lower control arm bushes for $89 compared to $380 to get it done by a mechanic. That is a huge saving seeing that for rear brake parts I was quoted $245 and I can get it all done by a mechanic for $300. Doing this on my own is going to save me at least half of what I got quoted so I'm not all that worried about fixing it up now. Last edited by thehittmann; 03-20-2005 at 02:05 AM. |
