kind of emergency, help!

2000 Jetta VR6, MT, 180,000 miles

Driving home from work tonight I begin to pull away from a light and POW, something lets go. The car will not move under it's own power, the engine revs, gears change, but no motion. I push the car off the street, and as I'm pushing it the metalic clicking sound comes from the front of the car. As near as I can tell the broken part is directly under the exhaust manifold. There is a heat shield on what my guess is the broken part. I've never changed this particular part, but my best guess is that it's the CV joint. Does this sound correct and reasonable?

Re: kind of emergency, help!

It sounds like an axle or CV, hopefully it's not inside the transmission bell housing, then it's a clutch.
