Engine Warning Light On/ Gear Indicator Not

My engine warning light comes on intermittently at the same time that the gear indicator goes out. The performance of my car does not seem to be affected and I wonder if this is simply a loose connection somewhere. I did notice this after a traffic accident that caused me to slam into a curb so hard I broke my rear axle on the passenger side. I have a 95 2 door 2.3 L engine DOHC Quad 4, GT model. Any ideas?

when the engine light comes on is a steady light or does it flash also when its on does you car feel different when its idlying, does it ever stall?. if its a steady light and when the light is on the car has a rough idle as in more shaky then ussual or anything like that it could mean you have a misfiring cylinder either by no preasure in the valve or just a bad spark plug. If its not what i described post on how the car feels when the light is on if there is any differences give me a bit more and maybe i can help ya out anywho if i was u id just scrap the sunfire after having one and fixing more problems then i can post including 3 engines i can tell you its a crap car. anywho hit me up with more info and maybe i can help ya out

Thanks for your reply regarding my engine light indicator. The car runs fine when this comes on. It comes on only at the same time when I notice that the gear indicator by the speedometer goes out. This happens when I'm driving regardless of whether I am in park or reverse and regardless of what gear I am in. The car is automatic transmission. No difference noticed in engine idle or performance that's why I think it's some type of short. Wondering if the gear indicator and engine trouble indicator are on the same circuit and there's a short in the circuit board??
