Ford 2500 superduty 6.0 l dsl vs. Chevy 2500hd duramax
I'm trying to find the good and bad of the 2004 Ford 2500 Superduty w/ a 6.0l dsl vs the 2004 Chevy 2500 HD w/ a Duramax. I'm wondering who has the better more reliable drivetrain.

Re: Ford 2500 superduty 6.0 l dsl vs. Chevy 2500hd duramax
Both engines are great, the Powersrtoke made 325hp/560lb-ft and the Duramax made 310hp/590lb-ft. Which is better is an opinion, but the more reliable drivetrain is the the Chevy's with the Allison trans. The Allison is by far the best trans available in the segment. The Torqshift on the other hand has had it's share of problems.

I'd take a 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 with the Cummins. But that's just me.

Ford F-250 for sure two people that my dad worked with had Duramax with Allison trans and both traded in their trucks for Fords because the trans was slipping when they towed. The Torqueshift is better geared and you can out pull or haul any stock Duramax. Even rated with less torque.

Correction: the '05 and newer Duramax's are rated at 605 lb-ft, more than the Cummins. And your damn right I'll take the Chevy any day, because I'm just a Chevy guy, and I'll tell ya I'm not a big fan of Ford, but these new Superduty's are gadamned awesome. With these two trucks it comes down purely to it being a Chevy or Ford, I don't think either of them have more downsides then the other, and they'll pull any damn trailer you want. I can't even decide which one looks better. I think the Ford does have the higher tow rating, but that's just a rating. I'm sure the Chevy will pull as much if not more.

Thats funny I have heard many bad things about the Allisons from people who owned or own them.
And the reason he said 590ft-lbs of torque for Duramax and not 605ft-lbs the comparison is 2004 not 2005. If it was 2005 I was going to say the Ford has 570ft-lbs at 200 lower Rpms than the '04 6.0l. The '05 hit peak toruqe at 1800rmps.

Re: Ford 2500 superduty 6.0 l dsl vs. Chevy 2500hd duramax
Allison is a good transmission... not great. They are a bulletproof design that chevy mucked up with weak shifts just like they have done with all of their transmissions since about 1991.
They are easy (yet expensive) to upgrade, but far below what they should be from stock. The ford's tranny isn't perfect either, but I think a far sight better than the Allison. Having said that, I prefer the duramax engine ![]() All of my diesel trucks I waited until the warranty was up and pulled the trannys for a complete rebuild with decent parts. The problem on both sides is that they take a great design, build the heck out of it, then it gets to the bean counters and they say two things; 1) it has to be able to be assembled on the same line as the gas trannys to save money and time, and 2) we can't have a "firm" shift since customers will complain. They drive their mercedes every day and don't realize that truck owners don't mind a firm shift as much as they do, but the good intentions of the engineers gets quelled by the bean counters. Then they have warranty claims out the wazzoo. In general, I find the ford to be more of a sturdy truck with heavier duty parts, and the chevy is more at home with leather and a satellite radio. My dad's 2004 duramax 2500 is a little floppy compared to my 2000 ford 250. I think Ford just makes a stiffer frame and components and it makes a more durable shell overall. I prefer the duramax for its manners and quieter operation. Do yourself a favor and get the six speed manual behind either diesel and you'll be happy.

Thanks for the input y'all. I appreciate it. And yes curtis73 I'll be getting a manual because I hate automatics in anything but the family car. I believe i'll get the Ford, I just drove both and the Ford fells like it will plumb spank the Chevy. Thanx again y'all for all the input.

Very well put curtis73. The '03s 6.0 Powerstokes were a little quieter than the Duramax, But then they got rid of the pre-injection (I think thats what it is called) and they are now louder. I think the system will be back on in '07 PSD.
