Does the engine turn over? If it does, does it sound right? A lot of people (me) put the timing exactly 1/2 off because the cam gears are marked poorly. If it makes a hollow thumping sound when it turns over it's probably that. If it sounds ok sometimes holding the throttle open when starting the car will help clear the combustion chamber of built up gas fumes which inhibit combustion.

any time you do a timing belt change you ALLWAYS TURN IT OVER BY HAND FIRST TO SEE IF IT BINDS UP AND MAKE SURE THE MARKS LINE UP.if its off more than a tooth and you do not turn it over by hand and just try to start it will result in bent valves period.

Re: Car not working after timing belt change
hey you know what i was on vfaq and they show the cam sprockets up close with the exuast cam with the bigger mark and the intake with the little mark. I checked my car and i had them switched this intake with the big mark and the exuast with the mittle mark so i hope this fixes my problem. Do you think that could be my problem?

Re: Car not working after timing belt change
Just make sure the cam dowel pin is at 12 oclock when the marks are lined up. The marks will still ine up with the cams at 6 oclock. I would highly recomend doing a compression test either way. It will tell you right away if you bent valves. Additionally, if someone doesnt know how to set the timing properly, odds are the tension was set incorrectly too. After rotating the motor clockwise stopping on the marks, Make sure the gap between the tensioner body and tensioner swing arm is between .15 and .18 inches, or 5/32nds and 3/16ths (to use drill bits or allen wrenches). Also verify that the ignition timing is still set properly (search for the procedure, if its not in your manual) since it is indexed off of the intake cam.
