Sub sounds weird...

I removed my box and the sub from it, sanded down baffle and shit all level and flush so the sub would mount flush. Caulked all the seams up that were leaking air when the sub would hit and put the sub back into the box and the box back in the trunk. It hits much louder and tighter, but now it makes a weird sound it didn't before. Like it's hitting something or dare I saw, blown/bottoming out? It's not clean at all. Maybe something is vibrating hardcore with it in the trunk and makes it sound like the sub is doing it, or the box is taking more of a beating now that it's more sealed off. I can't figure it out? Is the sub truely damaged? Is that puncture in the surround (which I did find out went clean through the surround) affecting this sound? Help!

Re: Sub sounds weird...

It could be bottoming out, but we need more info. What sub, how big is the box, and what kind of amp?

Re: Sub sounds weird...

i think a puncture in the surround could make the sub sound like that.

People were telling me it wouldn't affect it, but maybe it is. I'll try that and see how it goes.

Gain is around 1/4 to 1/3 of the way. I doubt it's clipping. All the bass boost is completely off as well. Ever hear a speaker when the cone is punctured/ripped or the surround is? That's how it sounds to me. From standing in front of it at the rear of the car it sounds just fine, but inside the car it makes that horrendous noise and sub doesn't carry notes like it did when I first installed it. It's actually installed RIGHT this time, but the sound is so different. I sealed all the leaks of air and the sub is sealed against the baffle properly and mounted securely. COULD a wire have come lose and I'm only playing on one coil? Is something damaged? Or is it just something with the box? I'm hoping it's something simple.

Re: Sub sounds weird...

i've had rips n stuff in my older speakers/subs and they didn't sound that much different, but then again i didn't put a nail/screwdriver thru it lol

theres a chance now since u SEALED the sub in, the pressure is tearing the hole open again? since its probably the weakest part of the sub? im probably wrong, just a thought tho

Re: Sub sounds weird...

Well, since the enclosure is a piece of shit to start with, I'd build a new enclosure with the right materials and make it match your sub and your ride. You need to take into account what your car's cabin is like and what the sub needs to run.

The box was done RIGHT. RIGHT materials, RIGHT measurements. I just didn't do clean cuts so not all the sides were flush. I fixed all that and it's perfect now. Just a new noise is coming out of it. I'm about to shower and I'll go outside and check it out.

WTF??? It has to be a cheesy box if he had unclean cuts and had to "sanded down baffle and shit all level and flush so the sub would mount flush". That means that before he had to have air leaks and other things going on. Yes, the hole in the surround doesn't help especially if it's a sealed box. If it is indeed the problem though, he should hear it with his ear next to it-he said he didn't.

It sounds to me like he's got the box all wrong. He says it sounds OK until he shuts the trunk and everything up.

I didn't look up this sub. If it's DVC, do you have them hooked up right? What about the controls on the amp? Did you have to mess with that when you took the shit out and mess with it?
