i have an 89 suburban,,,how do i find out what kinf of tranny is in it?,,,,thanks!!! |

i think all the 89's are 700R-4 if you have PRNODD21 and a kickdown cable on the throttle linkage it's a 700R-4 for sure.

I have an '89 2500 3/4 ton 2wd with a TH400 (turbo hydromatic). Look at the tranny and if you have a connector on the right side that connects to a rubber hose....you have the TH400

is the 700r4 an overdrive and the th400 just a 3 speed? Anyone confirm?

That may be on suburbans, but my 700r4 is a 3 speed, At least according to the RPO code in the glove box. Mine is also (according to the original owner) the first year they had the O/D option ('86)

all 700R-4's are 4 speed. if you have a 3 speed it's probably a TH-350

You are most likely going to want the cataloge from lmc if you are a new suburban owner. In the catalog there is a diagram showing how to identify your tranny by the shape of the pan. The most square is the 700r I believe
